Clifton - No 6 Fore Plane
Product Reference: [ CLI No6 ]
As with all Clifton woodworking tools, the No 6 is an accurate and smoothly functioning tool aimed at the discerning cabinet maker and woodworker.
The No6 size tool is traditionally used to get rough boards fairly flat, prior to final truing with a jointer plane. The 6 is also often used to prepare boards for smoothing with a smoother and/or scrapers.
The plane itself requires no flattening or fettling in prior to use, although the many users prefer a curved cutting edge with a No6 and so may prefer to hone the blade themselves. It would normally be used across or diagonally to the grain.
The Body and Frog are machined from grey cast iron, in the traditional "Bedrock" manner. The handle and knob are bubinga. The 2 3/8" blade is 01 steel, hardened to Rockwell 60-62. The cap iron is Clifton's two-piece design, the adjuster and lever clamp are solid polished brass.
*** Due to a recent change of ownership, Clifton are changing the colour of the plane livery. The colour "graphite" is replacing the familiar green that we are used to. We will update the images on the website as soon as we are able to. Customers that receive a plane in the new colour need not worry, as nothing else is changing. The same high manufacturing standards, from the same Sheffied foundry, by the same people. ***
